Every person’s experience at home with his or her family is unique. Whether it be the amount of freedom a child is given, the amount of opportunities a child is presented with, the number of siblings a child must learn to share with, plus infinitely more examples. In my case, I grew up with an older brother, a “mom”, and a “dad”. I was fortunate enough to have had many opportunities in things such as sports, music, and academics. My family life effected my education in one of the best ways possible. There are so many aspects of my home life that incorporate into how I got where I am now. I was given chances to get ahead, and I know I am lucky because there are too many children growing up without opportunities like the ones I had.
First of all, I was given opportunities to find my interests. My parents encouraged me to try many different kinds of things in order to see what I liked and I am forever grateful to them for that. Some things I tried and didn’t like, but there were many things that I did. Because of the encouragement from my parents, I now have a love for exercise, sports, and competition. In a totally different direction, I fell in love with the piano because I was given the privilege to take lessons. I never knew it then, but it truly was a privilege to be introduced to such a remarkable, beautiful instrument; which is what I quickly began to view it as. Along with sports, and music, I was able to find my interests in school as well. I was enrolled in an average, yet still fortunate, school district where I was able to learn about all the different subjects in a peaceful and structured environment. From these opportunities as a child, I began to grow a well balanced, healthy mind.
Another significant aspect of my family life is that I had help. I would return home from school with homework that my mom or dad would be more than happy to give me a hand with. My mom is an eighth grade teacher and was also the first person I would go to with questions. I had my own personal teacher whenever I needed her. This, I believe is extremely important within a family. Many children don’t have parents they can go to for help at their convenience like I had. I was lucky and because of this assistance, I was able to succeed much better in academics. I didn’t have to do it all on my own.
My parents did another crucial thing that effected my education; they cared. In my mind, maybe too much and they wouldn’t get off my back sometimes, but they did care. My parents made sure that I did my work; that I lived up to my potential as a student. Sometimes it was stressful and I felt pressure for their expectations in me, but I know now that their rules were, in the end, right. Pushing me to be a better student was for my benefit even if I didn’t believe it then. Because of this experience through grade school, I now have very high expectations for myself. I have learned how to be a good student and to push myself in academics. If my parents weren’t there to keep me focused as a child, I honestly don’t know where I would be now. I understand that many children don’t have this benefit and, once again, makes me very grateful for what I had growing up.
There is one more aspect of my family life that I believe to be one of the most important influences on my academics. My parents believed in me to achieve any goal that I dreamt of. Throughout my schooling I found a passion for chemistry, math, problem solving, and just recently, the French language. My parents never faltered in their support. Yes, I wanted to follow a very difficult career path, but I never got the idea that my parents had any doubt in me and what I could accomplish in my education. Not all children receive this much support in their families. It is absolutely why I am continuing with such a difficult major that only less than half of my class will actually graduate with me. I know I can be in the successful because I had and still have that support in my family.
There isn’t just one aspect of my family like that formed me into the student I am now, but these four experiences are the most important in my opinion. I am very lucky for the family life I had. I had parents who wanted to give me opportunities to develop interests. They wanted me to be well rounded and I did turn out to be. My family was always there to give me help when I needed it. My parents made sure that I always could ask questions and learn. My parents pushed me to be the best student I possibly could. This also helped me develop my own self discipline. And finally, my parents let me choose my own path in life. Even though I chose a difficult one, they stood by me and supported me and let me to believe that I can succeed. Therefore, my family life had an excellent effect on my education through all of these points and more. I am grateful for the life I had at home because I know that too many children don’t have the same experiences I did.
